AI week at Morning

A series of talks devoted to Artificial Intelligence

From 11 to 13 June, a range of events took place across the Morning spaces, exploring a variety of themes around Artificial Intelligence. Medicine, work, investment, technology... Many formats were explored: inspiring talks, meetups and direct exchanges with the audience. The aim of the week was also to shine a light on a great many members who specialise in the subject, while putting them alongside outside speakers (researchers, academics) to bring debate and a range of perspectives. A look back at these highlights.

Launch evening: "Can MedTech save lives?" (Morning, Richelieu, 11 June)

AI week began on 11 June in our space on the rue Richelieu. That day, it was Coralie Lemké (a journalist at Sciences & Avenir) who led the discussions. Around her were Gaelle Bouvet (Head of Data at Bot Design), Amaury Vanvinckenroye (Data Scientist at FibriCheck), Etienne Bendjebbar  (Partnership Manager at Owkin). To support these 3 Morning members in the discussion, we invited Adrien Parrot (anaesthetist and head of the Web, Innovation and Data department at the APHP). On the agenda: a stocktake of medical applications (predictive medicine, disease screening, personalised medicine, research, and so on), the challenges around collecting and anonymising data, and the specifics of designing an AI algorithm dedicated to medicine: What type and what volume of data are needed? What counts as an acceptable margin of error?

A whole part of the discussion was devoted to the impact of AI on current practice: will algorithms replace doctors? Can we imagine an AI that would combine different types of health data and lead a hospital's departments to work together more closely? Are healthcare organisations ready to adopt these new solutions? So many questions were debated that evening among the speakers, before giving way to exchanges with the audience.

“Will AI kill work?” (Morning, République, 12 June)

On Wednesday 12 June, Morning, République hosted an evening devoted to the impact of AI on work. The evening - led by Mathieu Brand (Usbek et Rica) - once again brought together entrepreneurs  from Morning, namely Jean-Philippe Couturier (CEO of Whoz) and Edouard d'Archimbaud (CTO of Kili Technology). That evening, the surprise guest was Daniel Kaplan (Plurality University) who brought some perspective to the subject with views from beyond the entrepreneurial world.

That same evening, the Paris Machine Learning Applications Group brought together an audience of specialists and technicians. It was an opportunity for the largest Meetup group devoted to AI to share its latest thinking at the Morning space on rue de Courcelles. Here too, the evening continued with open exchanges between speakers and audience.

“How do you raise funds in AI?” (Morning, Monceau, 13 June)

How do you raise funds in AI? A vast subject revisited by Romain Fouache, COO of Dataiku (the French deep learning start-up that raised, in succession, 3, 14, 28 and then... 101 million euros!) and Nicolas Iordanov, VC at Iris Capital, an investment fund specialising in the digital economy. This special session was reserved for Morning members.

Chrono Tribune, AI special (Morning, Amsterdam, 13 June)

The Morning team took advantage of AI week to launch a new format of gatherings between members, inspired by our developers' Meetups. Its name? The Chrono-tribune! The idea? An overarching theme, with 15-minute talks from members, followed by a moment of exchange, sharing and advice. Califrais, Kili Technology and Civiliz came to pitch a challenge or an issue they had faced. All the members were invited to listen, to question them and to enjoy complimentary drinks.
